Guilt & Shame

worryGuilt and shame are often closely linked emotions.  Ultimately they are both emotions that cause us to feel bad about ourselves.

Guilt is often related to our actions i.e. when we have done something we judge to be wrong.  Whereas shame has a more inward focus and are more likely to feel ashamed of who we are.

Young people affected by another person’s drinking may feel guilty about what may be happening, they may feel helpless to change the situation or that they are somehow to blame.

They may also feel ashamed of the situation they may be in which can make asking for help difficult.

Remember you are not to blame for and can’t control this person’s behaviour. Negative emotions can be destructive and have a impact on your health and wellbeing
